Food for Thought... A common first step in converting science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) textbooks into accessible formats involves converting GIF, BMP, TIFF, PNG and PDF images into MathML, LaTeX and Word 2007 files. This is a time-consuming, expensive and often manual process that requires the involvement of someone familiar with the substance of the texts being converted. Since the inception of Google's search engine, more than 17 billion web pages have been indexed. Receiving only a few hits on a search string means that the topic is unpopular and that very few people know about it. This is the case when searching for information regarding the conversion of STEM images into MathML. This lack of information makes converting STEM textbooks into accessible formats much more difficult than it needs to be.
