A few personal photos from the June, 1959 Meadowbrook Flood

Photos taken from in front of Steve Jacobs' house at 3556 Meadowbrook Blvd... the last house in Cleveland Heights!

As you can tell... my friends and I had a blast spray-painting things on the big sewer pipes. One day I came home from school to find the crane in front of our house sunk into the hole left by the flood. If you'll notice, one of the painted pipes has a saying painted in the lower right.  It says, "Kick out the jams." I never told my parents what that meant because I was only 12 years old. I'm the kid in the third photo down with the brown and blue shirt flirting with the neighbor girl. My other neighbor is holding a beer in front of me. Dig the long sideburns! The sign, "Entering University Heights" was on our front lawn.

Oh, the good old days. All of my neighbors sat on their front porches and visited with each other. We laughed and cried together. We walked in the flood waters together. We had picnics... and street parties.  We didn't lock our doors. Socializing with each other was something we all looked forward to. Very few of our mothers had to work. In many ways I wish I could visit everyone in the past... and in the 60's... which is another set of pictures I can't post. Need I say more?

If you recognize anyone in the photos I'd love to hear from you.  My e-mail is: steve.jacobs@ideal-group.org

I'll append their names to their photo.

Well, all for now. I hope all of you enjoy the photos as much as I did when I found them in an old box.

Warm regards,

Steve :-)
